DIY Hair Protein Treatment at Home

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Our hair needs nutrients and vitamins to grow and glow. It is also very important to keep our hair and scalp clean to grow hair and maintain length. Us naturals also know how difficult it is to fight tangles and prevent breakage especially when our hair needs moisture.

For most of us, we continue to use the hair remedies that our mothers and grandmothers have passed down to us including butter, hot oil treatment, eggs and avocado mix, coconut oil and honey, banana hair mask, onion juice and the list goes on. But what if I told you that most of these natural products lack the amount of protein our hair needs to grow and stay healthy?

Eating adequate protein is important for hair growth because our hair is made out of a protein called keratin. A lack of protein in our heath and hair usually leads to hair loss due to breakage or falling out. A healthy amount of protein that balances out the moisture in your hair will leave your hair feeling healthy and strong.

Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment

The Aphogee Two-Step DIY Protein Treatment is a store-bought protein treatment that is easy to apply at the comfort of your own home. It is a formula with magnesium and modified proteins that get activated in your hair with the application of heat. It comes with a balancing moisturizer that that helps bring back the moisture lost in your hair after applying the protein treatment.

The DIY protein treatment is easy to apply. Simply follow these steps for best results.

  1. Gently cleanse and shampoo your hair to get rid of excess hair products that weigh down your hair strands. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry your hair.

  2. The protein treatment is a very runny liquid, and it is best applied using a spray bottle. Transfer the protein treatment to your spray bottle for easy application. Make sure you shake well before use.

  3. Section your hair in to four different parts for easy application. You can do this using a rat tail comb and four hair scrunchies.

  4. Apply the Aphogee protein treatment into one section of your hair by spraying generously. Saturate your hair and comb blend for even distribution of the product. Remember NOT to tie, or braid your hair. Leave it hanging for it to dry and harden. Do not cover with anything.

  5. Sit under a dryer or blow dry your hair under medium heat until all of your hair dries. This process hardens the hair. It is important not to agitate your hair by coming it while the protein treatment is still in your hair.

  6. Wet your hair thoroughly with warm water until your feel all product has been rinsed.

  7. Apply Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer to your hair and scalp to moisturize your hair. Directions say you only need to leave it for2 minutes. Follow on with your favorite hair moisturizing masque for best results.

My Experience with Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment

Let me start by saying that I am not one to take care of my own hair. I leave it for my absolutely precious hair stylist to do so on a regular basis. But, with the Covid-19 pandemic forcing the country to go on lockdown and most neighborhood beauty salons being closed, I had to find a way to strengthen my very brittle and dry natural hair.

I did intensive research on ways I could revive my hair – it needed moisture, it was breaking and shedding, and it didn’t have any shine. My hair was growing fast, but also breaking all the time.

There were a lot of reviews on using onion juice, and rice water to help with my hair problems. But, there were mixed reviews and I wasn’t about to experiment on my already damaged hair.

That is when I learned about Aphogee. A lot of YouTubers had tried and there wasn’t much I could find on its cons apart from it smelling really bad. So, I ordered it online and followed the steps as I outlined them above and incorporated my own hair moisturizing masque.

I absolutely enjoyed the application process. It was super easy to follow. After the application, my hair felt a lot softer, shinier and smoother. I was able to run my fingers through my hair without any tangling. I have also noticed a decrease in hair breakage over the last few weeks. It was essential for me to add in the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque to moisturize my hair. Using the protein treatment alone would have dried out my hair completely.

I think this DIY Protein Treatment is a treatment worth looking in to specially to apply at home. Depending on what other treatments you are applying to your natural hair, this can definitely boost your hair growth and maintain length. It is affordable and can be found in your local beauty supply store. For best results, Aphogee recommends to reapply every 6 weeks. I am not hair specialist, but too much hair protein can also be bad for your hair. I would suggest you keep track of how your hair feels in 6 weeks and reapply as needed.

After using the 2 Step Protein Treatment from Aphogee and loving the results, I reached out to them and learned about other products they have for all hair types. They were kind enough to send me their Hair Strengthening Kit that helps stop hair breakage. I tried it and absolutely loved the results. My hair felt really texturized, soft and easy to manage. I am definitely reapplying again soon.
